Strategic premise
Audiences do not experience brands as campaigns.
They experience brands through channels. Each platform has different behaviors, audiences, expectations, formats, algorithms, communities, cultural norms, and reasons people open it.
Marketing teams still treat integrated campaigns like matching luggage: the same key visual, copy, commercial, talent, headline, and message resized, cropped, shortened, and distributed everywhere. That creates visual consistency while often destroying channel relevance. A television commercial uploaded vertically is still a television commercial.
The matching luggage trap
Distribution is not channel strategy.
The inherited production model starts with a 30-second commercial, then produces a 15-second cutdown, a 6-second cutdown, a vertical crop, a static banner, and a social post. Every piece is visibly related. Very little of it is designed around what a person came to that channel to do.
Historically, integrated marketing meant visual sameness because campaigns were built around a small number of broadcast placements. The internet multiplied the rooms, but the production system kept treating them like differently sized screens.
- 30-second commercial
- 15-second cutdown
- 6-second cutdown
- Vertical crop
- Static banner
- Social post
The play
Stop building matching luggage. Start building a shared world.
The job of a brand system is not making every channel identical. The job is making every channel feel unmistakably connected to the same idea. A campaign can have one strategy without requiring one execution.
The principle
One Strategy. Multiple Creative Behaviors.
Protect the things that make the campaign strategically true. Translate the things that make it culturally and behaviorally native.
Immutable Core
- Audience tension
- Brand point of view
- Cultural insight
- Campaign idea
- Product truth
- Distinctive brand assets
- Strategic territory
Flexible Expression
- Format
- Talent
- Tone
- Editing
- Story structure
- Copy
- Visual style
- Participation mechanics
- Publishing cadence
- Message emphasis
The five channel questions
Brief the behavior before the asset.
Ask these questions while the idea is being developed, not after production has finished.
Why does someone open this channel?
Is the job entertainment, connection, discovery, identity, information, escape, or utility?
What earns attention here?
Attention works differently in every environment. Name the pattern before choosing the format.
What role should the brand play?
A brand can have one character while behaving differently in different contexts.
What behaviors are native to the platform?
Look for duets, replies, tutorials, search, comments, reactions, creator stories, memes, reviews, remixes, livestreams, and community conversations.
What does success look like?
Different channels can do different jobs: fame, conversation, education, conversion, loyalty, credibility, consideration, or community.
Channel translation model
Give every channel a job.
The central idea stays recognizable. The creative behavior changes with the room.
Television
Create scale and mythology
Use television for emotional storytelling, cultural scale, recognizable talent, spectacle, broad awareness, and world-building.
TikTok
Enter the conversation
Build for participation, culture, creators, trends, curiosity, personality, behind-the-scenes stories and native conversation. Turning a TV commercial vertical does not make it TikTok content.
Build identity and desirability
Think of Instagram as the campaign's magazine: editorial photography, carousels, creators, artifacts, design, products, quotes, behind the scenes, and cultural references.
YouTube
Reward curiosity
Use YouTube for documentaries, deeper storytelling, interviews, product stories, making-of films, profiles, cultural context, and long-form explanation.
Creators
Reinterpret the idea
Creators should not repeat approved talking points. Establish the idea, the product truth, what must remain consistent, and what each creator is free to reinterpret.
Reddit / Communities
Earn credibility
Use expertise, transparency, access, useful answers, technical detail, and genuine participation. Do not force traditional campaign language into community conversations.
Search
Capture intent
Prioritize usefulness and clarity. Answer the question directly, make the next step obvious, and let the campaign idea organize the experience without obstructing it.
CRM
Deepen the relationship
Use email and SMS for access, loyalty, additional context, offers, early access, education, and the next useful step.
Retail
Make the promise tangible
Translate the campaign into packaging, store experience, events, product demos, staff behavior, signage, service, and merchandise.
Three-layer creative system
Build from truth to translation to native creation.
Immutable Core
The audience tension, brand point of view, product truth, strategic territory, and campaign idea.
Channel Translation
The role this channel plays, the audience mindset it meets, and the behavior that earns attention there.
Channel-Native Creation
The specific execution that could only have been made for this environment.
What could we create here that would make absolutely no sense anywhere else?
The five-question creative test
Use this before approving a channel execution.
A strong execution should score at least four out of five. If the first answer is yes, the work probably needs another translation pass.
Briefing teams differently
Replace the asset list with channel roles.
Suppose the campaign platform is: The future belongs to people willing to make the first move. The deliverables should describe what each channel needs to accomplish, not only the dimensions of the files.
Traditional deliverables brief
- 30 TV
- 15 TV
- 6 bumper
- 9:16 social
- 1:1 social
- Display banners
Channel role brief
- TV: Make people feel the emotional scale of taking the first move.
- TikTok: Start conversations about people who ignored conventional wisdom.
- Instagram: Create a visual archive of unconventional choices.
- YouTube: Tell deeper stories about people whose first moves changed their industries.
- Creators: Interpret what making the first move means in their world.
- CRM: Give existing customers early access to what comes next.
The organizational shift
Channel teams need to enter campaign development earlier.
Social teams should not receive the campaign two weeks before launch. Creator teams should not enter only after production. CRM teams should not simply inherit the hero visual. Community managers should not discover the campaign through the press release.
Channel specialists should help translate the core idea during concept development. That changes the questions, the production plan, and the work before the expensive decisions are locked.

Final rule
Consistency is not repetition.
Think of the campaign as a world with its own logic. Every channel is a different room inside that world. The furniture changes. The conversation changes. The people change. But you still know whose house you are in.
